“16 percent of American teachers who have second jobs”

    https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/09/06/magazine/teachers-america-second-jobs.html

“One in five American teachers now works a second job on top of full-time teaching.”

I couldn’t find evidence of the first claim.

Second claim seems to be true:

“The average salary of a U.S. teacher was $58,950 in 2016-’17. When adjusted for inflation, that’s slightly less than what the average teacher earned almost two decades ago.”

“Meanwhile, education workers are leaving their jobs at the fastest rate on record, according to government data first reported by the Wall Street Journal.” So it’s not just second jobs, several people are leaving entirely.

If you can find the info regarding salaries by USA teachers or state staff salaries, fine, but another point is how many have left the profession for greener pastures. Also very telling if you can find the figures.
