Fact check: Bernie Sanders' claim about teacher's salaries

Bernie Sanders wrote a tweet about the salaries of school teachers, he claimed the following:

Claim 1:

“More than a third of all teachers have worked a second job to makes ends meet”

Fact Check 1:

Needs verifying

16 percent of teachers in America currently have a second job. (New York Times) However, that doesn’t include the percentage of teachers who have had a second job in the past.

Claim 2:

“Average wages for public school teachers have gone DOWN over the last 20 years”

Fact Check 2:

This appears to be true.

In the U.S. the average salary of a teacher was $58,950 for the 2016-17 school year. If adjusted for inflation, that amount is slightly less than what teachers made in the 1999-2000 year. (USA Today) Although there isn’t more recent data than 2016-17, the statement seems broadly true.
