Senator Bernie Sanders wrote a tweet about numbers of americans who are pro legalization of marijuana. He claimed the following:

Claim 1:

“Nearly 7 in 10 Americans support marijuana legalization”

Fact Check 1: True

Two surveys have shown that 65% of the Americans or more are supporting the legalization of marijuana. Two other surveys which had been conducted about half a year before now, resulted in slightly more than 60%. But since according to longtime series of surveys the number of supporters is steadily rising,  now the value is probably higher.

In detail:
According to a recent survey conducted by the General Social Survey (GSS), a record 61.5 % of Americans said in 2018 weed should be legalized. Business Insider reported.
This result is corresponding with that of a survey by the Pew Research Center – 62% – conducted in Sept. 2018.
CBS NEWS POLL reported in April, 2019 that 65% of Americans voted pro legalization.
Gallup conducted telephone interviews in Oct., 2018. 66% of the interviewees voted pro legalization.
GSS and Gallup have pursued the topic since years. Their tables show that the number of supporters of legalization is steadily growing. Within the last two years reported, 2016 to 2018, the number of pro-voters rose from 57.0 to 61.5 respectively 60 to 66%. It is probable that the development continued during the last six months since the end of Oct. 2018.

Claim 2:

“majority of both Republicans and Democrats—support marijuana legalization.”

Fact Check 2: Probably true

According to the actual poll, the CBS NEWS POLL, 72% of the Democrats, 56% of the Republicans were in favor of legalizing weed. The results of the above mentioned 2018 polls considerably differ from the CBS with regard to the Republicans. The GSS reported 69% respectively 42%, similarly the Pew Research Center reporting 69%/45%.
