Maestro Yo-Yo Ma, the 63-year-old world-renowned cellist, performed Bach on both sides of the US-Mexico border (in Laredo, USA and in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico) on April 13th, 2019.

The Paris-born Chinese-American maestro, speaking in the shadow of the Juarex-Juarez-Lincoln International Bridge in Laredo, Texas, said:

“A country is not a hotel and it’s not full … in culture we build bridges, not walls”.

Quoting from the Statue of Liberty plaque, he added:

Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore … send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door”.

“We must live by those words”, he said.

Maestro Ma was also offered the key to the city of Laredo by Laredo’s mayor, Pete Saenz.
