Fact check: Kamala Harris's claim about the longest government shutdown in US history


On January 6, 2019, Kamala Harris, US Senator for California wrote a tweet commenting on the ongoing US federal government shutdown. In it she made the following claim:

The longest government shutdown in U.S. history was 21 days. We’re now on day 15. Federal workers and government contractors can’t wait months or years for their next paycheck.

Claim: 

“The longest government shutdown in US history was 21 days.”

Fact check: True.

To date, the longest shutdown of the federal government of the United States was from 16 December, 1995 to 6 January, 1996, for a total of 21 days.
