Azia Crocket (left), 27, and Ryan Anthony (right), 24, have been charged with felony manslaughter after turning themselves in.

The bar fight was not over the football game, according to a tweet from WDSU reporter Michael Vinsanau.

“[Ponchatoula’s Police] Chief said the fight began over an incident involving Bowers’ niece, who was intoxicated. Heartbreaking still, but not over football,” Vinsanau said.

Bowers was at the bar with his daughter, his niece, and the daughter’s boyfriend, per a report by the Times-Picayune. The daughter left early with her boyfriend because she had to work early the next morning. Witnesses say that while Bowers and his niece were at the bar, one of the men had an issue with the way the niece was interacting with another woman.

The confrontation is what led to the fight that left Bowers unconscious.

Bowers was an Opp, Ala., native and a resident of the Ponchatoula area.

A Facebook fundraiser was started by friends and family to help with hospital and other fees following the death.
