According to the New York Times – Google Plus (or Google+) is shutting down after seven years of service due to a vulnerability with the API and the lack of engagement.

Google believes that the bug was not exploited by anyone and did not result in any leaked data.  Nonetheless, their blog stated:

“…we cannot confirm which users were impacted by this bug. However, we ran a detailed analysis over the two weeks prior to patching the bug, and from that analysis, the Profiles of up to 500,000 Google+ accounts were potentially affected.”
