The Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine has been awarded to James Allison and Tasuku Honjo “for their discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation”.
2018 #NobelPrize laureate James P. Allison studied a protein that functions as a brake on the immune system. He realised the potential of releasing the brake and unleashing our immune cells to attack tumours. He developed this concept into a new approach for treating patients.
Dr. Allison and Dr. Honjo’s work includes using the body’s own immune system to attack the cancer, according to the New York Times. Their work has opened the door for new drugs and have put patients who had no options into remission.
The Noble Committee credits the winners for establishing new forms of cancer treatments.
