Fact check: Rep. Debbie Dingell's claims about social security

Representative Debbie Dingell, who is serving for Michigan’s 12th Congressional District, has been arguing for the expansion of social security for Americans.   She made the following claim on Twitter:

In minute fifty of her talk she made the claim ” Two thirds of the Americans in this country are relying on their social security”

Fact check:

According to the Employee Benefit Research Institute 28th Annual Retirement Confidence Survey, two in three retirees say Social Security is a major source of their income in retirement, though just 36 percent of workers say it will be a major source of their income when they retire.

However, if the original quote stated two thirds of “Americans” not American retirees, the following would pertain.

According to a report by Center on Budget and policy priorities ” About 62 million people, or more than 1 in every 6 U.S. residents, collected Social Security benefits in June 2018″

A recent survey by gallup conducted between April 2-11, 2018 showed that social security is a major source of income for 57 % of the retirees. by contrast ”  Close to half of nonretirees think a retirement savings account such as a 401(k) will be a major income stream for them in retirement — the most of any source — while only 30% predict Social Security will be this important”.

The official website for the social security shows that ” 67 million people received benefits from programs administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) in 2017″

This claim is rated: Mostly false
