A 25-year-old woman has died in Madhya Pradesh after a man who was stalking her on Facebook stabbed her 38 times with a sickle. The man has been charged with murder.
According to the Times of India, Suoriya Jain died in hospital, in the city of Indore, around 6.30am on Friday September 14.
The accused, Kamlesh Sahu, lay in wait for her for days after stalking her on Facebook. He struck the moment he found her alone and stabbed her 38 times with a sickle which he had bought from a bazaar in Indore. The incident took place in front of CHL Hospital.
Sahu claimed that he had been trying to gain Jain’s love since high school and couldn’t bear to see her “adopt a modern lifestyle and make male friends” (Hindustan Times).
Police say that on Thursday night, Sahu followed Jain down the lane near her office and then grabbed her by her hair and pushed her to the ground.
Sahu then pulled out a sickle in public and began to attack Jain. When she screamed for help, two men ran towards her, but Sahu swung the sickle at them, threatening to kill them if they came near.
The men then found a nearby police van and shouted for help. When police arrived on the scene, Sahu was sitting on Jain, slashing her face. Police overpowered him and carried the girl to hospital.
Police spokesperson Tehzeeb Qazi said Sahu had been charged with murder.
