Protests in Idlib for third week in a row

For the third week running, protests have been held in Idlib province, Syria, with large groups of men waving rebel flags and chanting against the government, according to numerous images posted on social media. Some images also show women protesting.

President Bashar al-Assad’s forces and their allies are thought to be preparing a major offensive against the province.

Tensions have been high, as government and allied forces have amassed around Idlib, home to millions including many displaced people. Millions of civilians are trapped in the region, the last bastion of rebel support in Syria.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned on September 11 that a full-scale battle “would unleash a humanitarian nightmare unlike any seen in the blood-soaked Syrian conflict.”
