A Cairo subway official, tired of people throwing themselves under trains, has told local press that depressed people should not consider the subway system as a “means” for suicide.  “Millions of people use the subway” the official said, without expressing any direct concern about their suffering or deaths.

The comments caused outrage on social media in Egypt. The African country of 95 million has suffered through a period of intense political oppression and economic instability since the 2013 coup saw the country’s first elected leader replaced by a military junta. That was of a similar nature to the one which ruled for decades before the 2011 revolution.
