Guccifer 2.0 Twitter account suspended

  1. Guccifer 2.0 is believed to be operated by Russian military intelligence (GRU)
  2. Dozens of Russian nationals have been indicted for interfering in 2016 U.S. election

The Twitter accounts of Guccifer 2.0 and DC Leaks have been suspended, a day after the indictment of a dozen Russian intelligence officers by the special counsel investigating Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election.

The indictment, announced as part of Robert Mueller’s ongoing investigation, was for conspiring to hack Democrats’ computers and interfere in the U.S. presidential elections.

Guccifer 2.0 is a digital persona believed to be operated by Russian intelligence military (GRU), while DC Leaks is a website responsible for leaking emails belonging to prominent U.S. figures.

The Justice Department accused the Russian nationals of engaging in “sustained effort” to hack emails of Democrats and computer networks, and named the accounts as part of Russia’s propaganda efforts during the 2016 presidential election. All 12 indicted are members of the GRU.

Guccifer 2.0 began posting hacked materials in June 2016, sharing stolen documents with journalists, a lobbyist and WikiLeaks, who spread the information through social media and news publications.

Guccifer 2.0 took his name from Guccifer, a Romanian hacker who became famous after he stole information from celebrities and political figures and posted it online. Guccifer 2.0 was widely believed to be administered by several Russians, though in recent interviews Guccifer 2.0 states he’s a lone hacker and not Russian.

The indictment arrived days before President Donald Trump’s first-ever summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Trump has yet to condemn Putin for the charges and on Saturday, Trump tweeted to blame former president Barack Obama for failing to respond in late 2016.
