    Thanks for covering this!

‘Qatar is currently home to around 1.7 million migrant workers,’ A quick Google suggests the total population of Qatar is around 2.5 million, which means roughly 70% of the Qatari population are migrant workers!! (The UK’s migrant worker population is a little over 10%)

What does this mean for the power balance between citizens and migrant workers in Qatar? Are public services well funded, if they exist at all? How readily accessible are the modes of recourse in Qatar for a non citizen? Is there a tradition of the rule of law in the country?

Given how easy it is to ‘other’ migrant workers, as evidenced in particular by the British tabloids, is there a culture in Qatar that only makes it more difficult for migrant workers to access judicial services? Are they being lampooned as feckless or is the media more critical of HKH?

In terms of the relief given by Qatari organisations to the migrant workers, are these individual acts of charity or is there an organisation on the ground?

I know that lots of migrant workers do take work abroad in order to remit money to their families. Often these families won’t be living in major cities so career options for many are subsistence farming or migrant labourer. Is there any word on how this period without pay has impacted the families of the migrant workers?

Thanks again for touching on such an interesting topic!

Qatar and many developing nations practice modern day slavery as a way for their elites to get rich quick with little political risk. The ILO will not act because its officeholders have a comfortable place in the political status quo. Frankly i would support a boycott of Qatar trade relations until they fix their labor problem.
