Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders said police quickly arrested Minassian and did not know his motives. A further 15 people were injured along a roughly mile-long (1.6-km) stretch of sidewalk.

Saunders said at a press conference (New York Times, may be behind paywall) that “the incident definitely looked deliberate.” A hotline has been set up for victims’ families and for witnesses.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the “tragic and senseless attack” had brought him “great sadness.”

“On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of those who were killed, and my thoughts for a fast and full recovery to those injured,” he said.

Minassian appeared in court on Tuesday on 10 counts of murder and 13 counts of attempted murder.

Facebook posts of his prior to the attack appear to praise killer Elliot Rodger and refer to the banned misogynistic “incel” Reddit group (Guardian).
