In his annual World Communications Day message, Pope Francis condemned so-called fake news, comparing manipulative false headlines to the cunning serpent in the Garden of Eden, as depicted in the Bible.

In a  speech themed around truth, the Pope said the threat of fake news “thrives on the absence of healthy confrontation with other sources of information.”

Having previously condemned fake news and the “sins of communication,” the Pope urged people to participate in a “journalism of peace.”
