Cheap online divorce takes advantage of January splitting season

A new, inexpensive online divorce procedure covering parts of the UK has highlighted the popularity of January as the month to initiate a marital split. It’s the time of year when most divorces are filed both in the UK and the United States, with the first working Monday of January becoming known as “Divorce Day” (BBC) in certain legal circles.

The Co-op, a business group that includes supermarkets, a lender, and insurer, estimates the service could cut the time to complete an uncontested divorce in England and Wales from about six to four months (The Guardian). And the cost, around £1,000 ($1,380) is just more than 10 percent of the usual amount.

In the UK, more than 40,500 people search for divorce online in chilly winter month, reports London-based divorce advisers Amicable.

Kathryn Smerling, a New York City-based psychotherapist, told Business Insider that warring couples with kids usually “hold things together” during the holidays, but once the glow is gone they seek legal advice.

“We see a significant increase in people seeking out divorce advice and, ultimately, filing,” said James McLaren partner at McLaren & Lee, a legal firm in Columbia, South Carolina (Chicago Tribune). The number of filings is one-third more than normal. That begins in January and probably goes into early March.”

According to the Guardian, all UK married couples will be able to apply online for divorce as part of a £1 billion scheme implemented by the Ministry of Justice.
