Trump to agree to Iran nuclear deal, for now

U.S. president Donald J. Trump agreed to extend the sanctions waver on Iran, extending the pivotal nuclear deal that limits Iran’s nuclear energy program, according to unnamed officials quoted by Reuters.

However the president is to set a deadline for Congress and European countries to improve the deal or the U.S. will pull out, as reported by the BBC. Trump has repeatedly said he wants to pull out of the deal or amend it, but European politicians say it is vital for international security.

President Trump said he would not sign off on renewing the accord last October when he proposed new sanctions, claiming Iran had not kept to its side of the pact.

The White House is due to make an official announcement on the deadline on Friday.

Key details

  • The deal struck in 2015 between seven world powers – the U.S., UK, Iran, Russia, France, China, and Germany – was one of the signature foreign policy achievements of Barack Obama’s presidency.
  • The agreement codified limitations to Iran’s nuclear energy program in return for a lifting of international economic sanctions, including U.S. sanctions on Iran’s oil exports.

Key voices

  • “The aim is to send a message to Washington that Iran is complying and that it is better to have the nuclear agreement than to isolate Tehran,” said a diplomatic source quoted by Reuters.
  • The deal is “a crucial agreement that makes the world safer,” British foreign secretary Boris Johnson said on Thursday (AP).
  • German foreign minister Sigmar Gabriel said the EU wanted to preserve the deal (AP) “because it is in our interest not to develop or to see that nuclear weapons are developed in Iran.”
