UN cutting $285 million from budget

The United Nations General Assembly approved a budget reduction of $286 million for 2018-2019.

The UN says it will reduce costs of contractual services, furniture and equipment, consultation and travel. The $5.397 billion budget passed in late December is lower than Secretary-General António Guterres sought.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said the reduction to the budget was “historic” and a “step in the right direction.”

“The inefficiency and overspending of the United Nations are well known. We will no longer let the generosity of the American people be taken advantage of or remain unchecked,” she said. “You can be sure we’ll continue to look at ways to increase the UN’s efficiency while protecting our interests.”

The regular budget of the UN is formed from contributions based on the solvency of each of the 193 member states and calculated on the countries’ average GDP and income per capita. (Factly)

According to the Committee on Contributions of the UN General Assembly, the U.S. is the largest financial contributor, providing 22 percent of the budget in 2017. The next-biggest contributor , Japan, contributes almost 10 percent. EU countries together pay about 30 percent.

Last week U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to cut financial aid to countries that voted in favor of a resolution calling on the U.S. to withdraw its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. While 128 countries supported the resolution, it is non-binding; nine voted against and 35 abstained.

“The United States will remember this day in which it was singled out for attack in the General Assembly for the very act of exercising our right as a sovereign nation,” Haley told the assembly in New York City.
