This is a “small project under construction” and we will add to it as it develops. You are welcome to EDIT or TALK.

On December 21, as many as 5.5 million Catalans (El País) are expected to vote for a new regional parliament composed of 135 members. Members of parliament elect a regional president, who then appoints ministers to form a Catalonia’s government, known as the Generalitat.

But these regional elections are unprecedented in Spain’s roughly four-decades-old democracy.

Called by Madrid shortly after it activated Article 155 of Spain’s constitution, effectively imposing direct rule over Catalonia due to the latter’s unilateral declaration of independence on October 27, many see these elections as a way of returning the region to the Spanish fold (La Gaceta). For many separatists, December 21 serves as the most recent example of what they perceive to be a Madridista political culture tainted with strains of authoritarianism (The Times).

Who will win is anyone’s guess. Recent polls (El País) have support for unionist and separatist blocs tied neck and neck, while giving the separatists a slightly higher chance of forming a new government. But like Jorge Galindo, a political analyst and editor of Politikon website, told WikiTribune, the answer is suspended like “a dice in the air.”

With that in mind, we are interested in knowing what you think of these elections, and what your questions are. You can leave your queries and comments in the TALK section.

If you’re a Spanish citizen who resides in Catalonia, or a Catalonian residing abroad, and you are planning to vote on December 21, we would be really interested to know:

  • How you feel about December 21 elections
  • What you perceive the mood on the ground to be like
  • Whether you think the elections will put the independence crisis to rest, one way or another
