Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has finally stepped down , ending his nearly four decades of rule as the country’s leader.
Addressing a cheering parliament, speaker Jacob Mudenda read out Mugabe’s resignation letter, Associated Press has reported.
His resignation has come after parliament initiated impeachment proceedings earlier today.
According to the BBC, the recently fired Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to be sworn in as the new president on Friday, said the state broadcaster. Mnangagwa fled to South Africa two weeks ago and is due to return today.
People have come onto the street in Zimbabwe to celebrate the end of the rule of Mugabe.
Following Mugabe’s resignation letter, impeachment proceedings in parliament were suspended.
