Fact check: Bernie Sanders' claims about Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg's income


Bernie Sanders wrote a tweet supporting the cafeteria workers at Facebook where he claimed the following:

Claim 1:

“Mark Zuckerberg has a net worth of $75 billion”

Fact Check 1:

True. The majority of Mark Zuckerberg’s wealth is in the form of Facebook shares and his holdings are the subject of SEC filings. The value fluctuates with the Facebook share price, but $75 billion is in line with the figure estimated by forbes.com. Zuckerberg’s Bloomberg profile has a graph of their estimate of his net personal worth over time, which puts the figure at $79.5 billion as of July 17, 2019.

Claim 2:

“Facebook made $22 billion in profits last year[2018]”

Fact Check 2:

True. The figure is in line with Facebook’s own figures for full year ended December 31, 2018, the most recent year for which figures are available.
