Before talking about the sources I would like the summary to be slightly changed, since I think the way is now does not quite reflect the content of the article. It is quite straightforward suggesting that poverty is directly caused by poor infrastructure, but this is not the main idea of the article. Instead, I wanted to outline that welath or poverty can be determined by various factors (among which infrastructure plays definitely a decisive role). Moreover, in Romania there was not an open and honest debate about that but this matter was mainly used as a political weapon to blame one party or the other. So, I would like to have following summary: "Debate over Romania's poorest region (North-East) and its infrastructure" Thanks Bogdan )

  1. Hi Ed,
Thanks and sorry for replying slightly late!
So, I would like to have following summary: “Debate over Romania’s poorest region (North-East) and its infrastructure”
    Thanks
    Bogdan

    1. Hello again Ed,
some things about the sources :
“Whether by road, rail or water, every region or metropolitan area that flourished worldwide had access either to maritime transportation or good land infrastructure (source).” –> here I think is a pretty obvious thing, there is no specific link to indicate that, but is a sort of historical fact, that the closer some region is to infrastructure, the richer became ..

“As a result frictions have escalated between local and national politicians (source).” –> for that I would have unfortunately only sources in Romanian ..

€4 billion costs have since been re-evaluated at €7 billion, around 3 percent of Romania’s GDP (source). –> naming a source here would be a bit redundant, since essential is to indicate the costs (4 and then 7 billion) and its share of GDP (3%), this is enough to give a good feeling of how costly is this

made it inefficient and not able to be used at its full capacity (source) –> this is explained earlier. Due to the fact it was closed for a while, for reparations, and due to corruption scandals, it was made inefficient and underused ..

For the rest I am going to insert links

But please tell me what do you think about my thoughts

      Bogdan

      1. Thanks Bogdan, that’s fine on the summary. Feel free to change that.

        Great, thanks for adding links.

        Ok, as for these:

“Whether by road, rail or water…” OK, I’ll edit this slightly.

“As a result frictions have escalated between local and national politicians (source).” Romanian sources would be absolutely fine.

€4 billion costs have since been re-evaluated at €7 billion, around 3 percent of Romania’s GDP (source). Are there any media reports to back this up?

        Thanks,

        Ed

        1. Thanks for getting to me, Ed!
I’ll add the links for the remaining ones by tomorrow
As for the last one – €4 billion costs have since been re-evaluated at €7 billion, around 3 percent of Romania’s GDP (source). 1. Great, thanks. Looking forward to it…

            1. Done! Just put together some phrases which I thought were before too loosely connected and added discussed links.
I’ll need now also a picture for it ..

  2. Hi Bogdan,

We’ve almost got your latest story ready to go, “Bridging Romania’s infrastructure gap,” but could you have a look at where it says “source” and add attribution where possible.

Then we’ll publish early next week.

    Many thanks,

    Ed

  3. Hi Ed,
Thanks for coming to me! It definitely needs development 🙂 as a matter of fact I made this draft public a bit mistakenly .. I actually wanted to gather more references and only afterwards to start putting them together.
So, I want to bring together in a coherent and causal manner following ideas:
    – the region where I was born, North-East Romania, is sadly one of EU poorest
    – a region’s accessibility, along with its level of mobility and dynamics of its population, has a lot to do with its economic growth and standard of living
    – now this piece is to roughly investigate whether the region I mentioned is also among the EUs hardest accessible ones. Are there others in EU being as unaccessible (by land/highways, by railways, by air) as this one? Are they also experiencing similar poverty levels within their countries?
    – I think this is important because since a while (maybe one year or so) there is a political debate in Romania about that – political oppostion (the liberals) is blaming current government (social-democrats) to leave this region further in this dire situation by apparently cancelling the funds for a highway connectitng NE Romania to Transylvania nd then further to Hungary and rest of Europe
    – this claim in spite of being fully justified has to be considered in the context of past experiences, due to corrupt politics (liberals as well as social-democrats) and various many other reasons, showed such a project is well beyond Romania’s expenditure possibilities .. Therefore also following question arises: could this narrative also be used only as a political weapon to put pressure on current governement
    – Another issue on that would be – which economic interest might EU have to endorse such a project, since this region is located near a military frozen conflict (Transnistria and Ukraine)?
This would be my plan, so far – a 400-500 words piece putting together all these facts and raising some questions ..
I’ll elaborate more on that in the coming days
    Thanks

    1. Thanks Bogdan,

Please do remember the international angle when writing up your story – why would someone in Madrid, Malaysia or Minnesota (to randomly pick three places beginning with M) be interested in your piece? And make sure you get an accessible human angle.

This article might also help in the drafting process: https://www.wikitribune.com/project/how-to-write-a-piece-of-journalism-for-wikitribune/

      Best

    2. I’ve also moved your story back into the drafts section – if you move it into pending when you’re ready, an editor will look at it then.

      Thanks

      1. Hi Ed,
I updated it some days ago and should be close to its final form, if some editor can have a look on it

  4. Hi Bogdan,

Thanks for your “North, by North East” suggested story. For it to be a WikiTribune story it needs some development.

Can you explain why this is important on a human level?
Why would this be interesting to a global reader?
What is the significance of the lack of transport infrastructure – what does it mean to people in real terms?
Is there a news angle to the story? Has something happened recently that makes this more important?

    Thanks
