Special Counsel Robert Muller investigates possible ties between the Donald J. Trump campaign and the Russian government. A different team from the Department of Justice raided the office of Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen. Now, the DOJ’s number two is preparing to be fired.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein expressed acceptance over the possibility of being fired, according to NBC News. Since Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the “Russian probe,” Rosenstein oversees the special counsel investigation, led by Robert Mueller. This has caused critics of the president to fear that his departure could result in Trump ending the investigation.

The New York Times reported that Trump wanted to fire Mueller in December, citing unnamed sources. Trump has denied these reports, tweeting that he “would have fired him” already if they were true.

Though Trump has indicated on April 11 that he sees Rosenstein as unfit to oversee the Russian probe because of a conflict of interest. He tweeted that Rosenstein is the “most conflicted of all” because he had a role in firing FBI Director James Comey and the surveillance order of Trump campaign official Carter Page – both of which are true. Rosenstein recommended that Comey be terminated due to his handling of the investigation over Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server. Trump cited the “Comey letter” as the reason for his firing (Washington Post).
