Amazon to Buy Smart Doorbell Startup Ring

  1. Ring acquisition could bolster Amazon's new Key in-home delivery service
  2. Deal is latest in Amazon push in smart home along with its Echo

Amazon this week announced it’ll acquire Ring, a smart doorbell company with builds WiFi-connected video doorbells that allow homeowners to view and talk to people at their door from their smartphone. Ring also sells security cameras and systems and the acquisition extends Amazon’s move into so-called smart home devices.

The deal may bolster Amazon’s Key service, which allows Amazon deliveries to be dropped off inside Amazon Prime service members’ homes and allows access for other service providers. Although Key was rolled out in select cities in 2017, it has been slow to catch on amid security concerns (Ars Technica). Key lets homeowners view deliveries, but Ring’s home security devices could help bring more trust to the program.

Amazon has been making a strong push into “smart home” products with its Echo speaker and other devices. The Echo is estimated to hold nearly 70 percent of the smart home speaker market (Slate) and its Echo Dot was the best selling product over the 2017 holiday season. Amazon hopes that its smart home ecosystem will make purchasing more Amazon products as easy as possible, as it has with its Kindle e-book products. Amazon accounts for above 80 percent of US e-book sales (Publish Drive).
