Trump lawyer sues research firm and Buzzfeed over Russia dossier

President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, Michael D. Cohen, filed a defamation lawsuit against Fusion GPS, the research firm behind the controversial dossier prepared by a former British spy which suggested Russia had potentially compromising information on Trump and which alluded to possible collusion between his campaign and Moscow.

The dossier portrayed Cohen as a central figure in what it depicted as a possible conspiracy. In a separate lawsuit, Cohen is also suing Buzzfeed, which published the dossier in full exactly a year ago after it had been widely circulated among journalists and politicians in Washington.

Enough is enough of the #fake #RussianDossier. Just filed a defamation action against @BuzzFeedNews for publishing the lie filled document on @POTUS @realDonaldTrump and me!

In other key developments on the dossier, seen as central to the investigation into possible collusion led by special investigator Robert Mueller:

  • Buzzfeed editor-in-chief Ben Smith used a New York Times opinion column to defend his decision — exactly a year ago — to publish the Steele dossier in the public interest.
  • Dianne Feinstein, the senior Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, took the highly unusual step (Washington Post) to publish in full the testimony of the founder of Fusion GPS, Glenn R. Simpson, in which he defended the dossiers validity as well as the motives and skills of former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele.
    • Simpson said that they alerted the FBI of the contents of the dossier (Newsweek).
    • Feinstein’s decision to release the transcript infuriated President Trump who called the move “underhanded” and even “possibly illegal.”

The fact that Sneaky Dianne Feinstein, who has on numerous occasions stated that collusion between Trump/Russia has not been found, would release testimony in such an underhanded and possibly illegal way, totally without authorization, is a disgrace. Must have tough Primary!

  • The dossier alleges Igor Sechin, the head of the Russian-state oil company Rosneft, used a meeting with former campaign adviser Carter Page to advocate for the U.S. to remove economic sanctions on Russia (Newsweek). While Page denied any interaction with Sechin, the House Intelligence committee released testimony where he admitted to meeting with the Putin-backed oil tycoon.
  • Earlier, Republican Senator Chuck Grassley had taken the equally unusual step of seeking a criminal investigation of Steele, alleging he had lied to the FBI over his contacts with the news media about the dossier.
  • A new report by Senate Democrats, being published later today and previewed here by the New York Times, says Russian interference in the 2016 election fits into a pattern of meddling over nearly two decades. The report tracks Russian efforts in 19 countries and offers more than 30 recommendations to safeguard the American electoral process.
  • During a news conference on Wednesday, President Trump said that it “seems unlikely” that he’d give an interview to Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating the possible coordination between Trump’s campaign and the Russian government (BBC). This marks a change from his statement last year when he said he would be willing to talk to Mueller under oath.
