President Robert Mugabe has finally stepped down, ending nearly four decades of rule as Zimbabwe’s leader.

Addressing a cheering parliament, speaker Jacob Mudenda read out Mugabe’s resignation letter, according to the BBC.

“I Robert Gabriel Mugabe in terms of section 96 of the constitution of Zimbabwe hereby formally tender my resignation … with immediate effect,” said Mudenda, reading the letter.

His resignation has come after parliament initiated impeachment proceedings earlier.

According to the BBC, the recently fired Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to be sworn in as the new president on Friday. Mnangagwa fled to South Africa two weeks ago and is due to return today.

People have come onto the streets in Zimbabwe to celebrate the end of Mugabe’s rule.

Following his resignation, impeachment proceedings in parliament were suspended.
