Talk for Story "Gloria Steinem on fighting back: If they call you a slut, say ‘Thank you’"

Talk about this Story

Hi. When the whole Wikitribune concept was still being defined, one of the ideas that were transmitted was that words of interviewees would not be manipulated or put out of context. I like that, in this story, you have kept the editing to the minimum, and added a transcript of the conversation. However, how can I, as a reader, be sure that the transcript is rigorous and true, and not a deliberately manipulated version of it? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean that I don’t trust the goodwill of the Wikitribune staff. Do you think that adding a voice/video recording of the conversation would contribute to the transparency of the process?

    Congratulations about this ambitious project!

Hi Eduardo! We are working to put in place a way to attach voice clips to stories so sometime soon there will be both transcripts and audio files to back up the neutrality and accuracy of stories.

I have to second Eduardo here, because it’s brilliant that the full transcript is included in WT’s interview pieces. Other publications must deem these too long to print, certainly, but also in some ways they are ‘dirty’ and ‘private’. Even though I did not take the time to read the whole transcript, I was immediately gratified to see how HUMAN the interaction was, and how OPEN I felt with a full, unedited transcript of the conversation in front of my eyes.

More generally I’m impressed by the transparency of the edit history on this story. I LOL’ed when I came across Steve Beatty’s edit of the author’s English “humour” to the American “humor” : does WikiTribune have a stance on the styling?

Finally, who are the fact checkers? It would be interesting to consider having their names and work recognized (recognised in English spelling?) here.

Bravo Lydia and WT team, keep up the good work.

      David

Hey David, thanks for your feedback. It is much appreciated.

We are writing with American spellings – but as I’m from England where we love an “ise” over “ize”, I often miss some so our editors make the right amendments.

As for fact-checkers, we are all working on verifying claims made in stories, notably editors and community members. Lydia

Thanks for using the ‘interview’ format, including the questions followed by ‘verbatim’ responses with (presumably) only light editing.

No problem – out of interest, what do you like about the Q and A format?
