  • Police in Las Vegas are searching for the motive behind the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. The shooting left at least 59 dead and 527 injured after Stephen Paddock, 64, opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel towards a music festival on Sunday evening. Police found him dead in his hotel room alongside 23 firearms. They also found “in excess of” 19 firearms and explosives at his home in Mesquite, Nevada. Investigators have found no link to international terrorism, despite a claim from so-called Islamic State via its communication channel Amaq.
  • Suicide attackers have hit an Indian army camp in Indian-administered Kashmir.  Three security force personnel were injured in the attack. “One militant has been killed and three jawans have been injured,” said inspector general Muneer Khan, according to the Hindustan Times. He added that at least two more militants were seen to have been hiding inside a building.  The camp is located just outside the international airport in Srinagar – a heavily fortified area. The attackers were still on the camp’s premises, holed up in a building, border security officials said.

  • Catalan trade unions have called a general strike due to “the grave violation of rights and freedoms” seen during Sunday’s disputed independence ballot. Spain’s central government declared the referendum illegal and ordered a police crackdown on voters. Some police officers were seen firing rubber bullets, storming into polling stations and pulling women by their hair. Despite this, more than two million people reportedly voted. La Vanguardia newspaper reported that the regional government is preparing for a week-long strike from October 3, according to Bloomberg. Main Spanish unions CCOO and UGT distanced themselves from the planned strike. “We will not back positions that give coverage to a unilateral declaration of independence,” they said, according to Spanish newspaper El Pais.

What we are watching and reading

  • What does gun violence in America really cost? This 2015 piece from Mother Jones magazine has been circulating again after the deadliest shooting in U.S history. The special investigation lays out the human cost – 30,000 deaths and 80,000 injured as well as the financial cost. The magazine puts the number at US$229 billion dollars a year, including direct costs like healthcare but also indirect costs like lost time at work. It is a number that rivals the total spend on U.S. Medicare.
  • On the same theme Vox has pulled together an interactive map of every mass shooting since Sandy Hook in 2013. There are at least 1,518 of them, with at least 1,715 people killed and 6,089 wounded.
  • Access to affordable housing. Rural to urban migration in search of a better life. These questions determine the lives of millions of people across the globe. But in Mongolia’s capital, Ulan Bator, as in so many other places, they are also the forces that push thousands out into the city’s periphery and into slums. Life on Mongolia’s once-sleepy steppe is changing fast.
