Talk about this Project

Is anyone familiar with Desoto Inc.? I have been researching them for a few months and, if they can do what they are proposing, they will have a substantial effect on the global economy. I would love to cover them in some way, but I’m not sure of a few things.

Desoto Inc is a subsidiary of Medici Venture— who is a subsidiary of Overstock.com— that is working to place land ownership claims on a blockchain in areas where the local government may not be reliable enough to do it themselves. Once on their blockchain, the land rights can be tokenized and sold through another Overstock subsidiary, T0’s alternative trading system (ATS). An ATS, or dark pool, is a fancy term for a private exchange where parties can buy and sell assets.

The net effect of this tokenization is to offer financing to people in “developing countries,” by way of their land holdings. By the estimate of Overstock’s CEO, Patrick Bryne, this will unlock around $14 trillion in dead capital. For perspective, $14 trillion is a little more than the total cash supply plus savings, mutual funds, money market securities and other time deposits of the United States. To be blunt, it’s an epic amount of money.

Would this be a better fit for the ‘distributed ledgers’ project or the ‘cryptocurrencies’? I’m having trouble finding a solid news peg, any suggestions? Key interviews for this piece seem to be with global millionaires, any suggestions on how to get them to agree to an interview?

Is it possible to look into the effects that cryptocurrency mining is having on the supply of graphics cards?

It would be nice to know if the availability of stock is likely to improve this year.

What does Nvidia and AMD intend to do about this problem?

They could design GPUs or cards that cannot be used for mining, and perhaps produce chips specifically for mining. So as to keep everyone happy.

I recommend that someone look into the implications of quantum computing for the security of blockchain data.

    1. [ This comment is from a user you have muted ] (show)

Do you mean from the point of view of creating better security or breaking existing security?

      1. [ This comment is from a user you have muted ] (show)

I meant mostly the problem to breaking the security of blockchains. Since posting my comment I’ve seen some discussion of work being done to address the issue but not much.

The universal impact of wide-spread quantum computing would mean that ALL pre-quantum cryptography would be broken. Luckily, we know it’s coming and developments on quantum-resistant cryptography are already being deployed in the real world.

Once more people are using quantum-based chips we’ll be able to use quantum-based cryptography which is unbreakable even to a quantum machine.

To answer your question directly: What are the implications of quantum computing to the security of blockchain data? Short term, updates. Long term, better cryptography.

Should we be looking into a helicopter view article of what all the hype is about and all these terms are?

I still meet people on a regular basis that didn’t know there were other things happening besides just Bitcoin, or those on the brink of getting caught up in one of the many scams.

Robin, our cryptocurrencies coverage so far is here: https://www.wikitribune.com/?s=cryptocurrencies
Linh has led our staff cover on this and we recognise the community may have a great deal of knowledge to offer in this area. I think you will find some good introductory pieces to the current frenzy but also some of the underlying factors. One area that seems particularly interesting at the moment is whether the bitcoin “resellers” have sufficiently strong technology to defend their ledgers, even if the underlying blockchain is secure. What would you have us do or do you want to contribute?

New stories about Bitfinex – both their recent legal threats and the apparent impossibility of cashing tethers would be really interesting. Especially an explainer given that tethers/tether creation appear(s) to be one of the main things driving price increases (or they were)

Be aware, the “suggested resources” mentions Reddit/r/Bitcoin amongst others.

I do not claim to be an expert on Bitcoin matters however there is much controversy surrounding /r/Bitcoin.

This community is moderated and controlled exclusively by members of a single company – Blockstream – and there is overwhelming evidence of manipulation and censorship in order to forward the interests of this company.
Tread with caution. After the revelations of Russian manipulation of social media sites – Reddit included – the integrity of these communities must continually be challenged. There are further concerns in the /r/btc community regarding several moderators and external interests.

Thank you for putting this on the talk page for others to see. As the content of Project space is community run please feel free to remove or add to these as you see fit. Giving people a head’s up is really helpful.

No creo que este tipo de proyectos deberían incluirse en wikitribune. Cryptocurrencies no están legisladas, son volatiles y además están atadas a la ilegalidad.

The “Will blockchain replace the business plan?” link leads to a 404 page.

    1. [ This comment is from a user you have muted ] (show)

Really not sure why it’s doing that for you. Gonna put this here as an ‘is anyone else experiencing this?’ question. If you get that error again can you leave a note on my profile talk? I’ll have to look into it.

      1. [ This comment is from a user you have muted ] (show)

It will show a 404 if you try to read without signing in, but since it’s a draft, I think that’s on purpose.

        1. [ This comment is from a user you have muted ] (show)

Ah! Yes, that would be on purpose.

  9. [ This comment is from a user you have muted ] (show)

The “Will blockchain replace the business plan?” link is broken.

    1. [ This comment is from a user you have muted ] (show)

Huh. Works over here. Do you get a 404?

  10. [ This comment is from a user you have muted ] (show)

The “Pitch Story Ideas Here” link leads to a 404.

    1. [ This comment is from a user you have muted ] (show)

Sorry about that, dead page. Story pitches are now on TALK pages and the Daily Agenda where appropriate.

I really want to know more about blockchain and its use as a security ID mechanism please?

  13. [ This comment is from a user you have muted ] (show)

Coinbase are saying that they are going to be sticking with the original blockchain as they don’t know how long the new one (Bitcoin Cash) will last. Would be good to get perspectives on how people think that’s going to go and whether or not Bitcoin Cash will have longevity.
