The gunman fired from the <a href="https://apnews.com/4eeaef2efced49698855d13830de3327/Shooting-on-Las-Vegas-Strip-kills-20,-wounds-more-than-100">32nd</a> floor of a hotel on the Las Vegas Strip into an open-air music festival across the street. The country musical festival, Route 91 Harvest, was <a href="https://www.lvmpd.com/en-us/Press%20Releases/PO%20235%2010-02-17.pdf">attended by more than 22,000</a> people.
Police named the attacker as Stephen Paddock, 64, but did not offer any information on a potential motive.
An off-duty Las Vegas police officer was among the dead, according to police. The force said <a href="https://www.lvmpd.com/en-us/Press%20Releases/PO%20235%2010-02-17.pdf">more than 400 people were transported</a> to local hospitals after the incident.
Police initially said Paddock was shot and killed by officers. However, the department later said officers responding to the incident found the suspect dead in his hotel room. Sheriff Joseph Lombardo of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department<a href="https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-usa-lasvegas-shooting/at-least-20-killed-at-shooting-rampage-at-las-vegas-concert-idUKKCN1C70FZ"> described</a> the suspect as a local man who was believed to have acted alone.
Police <a href="https://twitter.com/LVMPD/status/914782708831625216">said they were looking to question a woman named Marilou Danley</a> in relation to the investigation. However, CNN and Fox News <a href="https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-usa-lasvegas-shooting/at-least-50-dead-more-than-400-hurt-in-las-vegas-concert-attack-idUKKCN1C70FZ">have reported</a> police forces now regard her as unrelated to the case.
Police have also located two cars thought to have belonged to the dead suspect.
U.S. President Donald J. Trump tweeted: “My warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible Las Vegas shooting. God bless you!”
