<strong>The Nigerian Assembly's Senate proceedings were disrupted yesterday, after Senator Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe from the opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) said in a claim that the current President Muhammadu Buhari is 'incompetent', according to a report in the <a href="http://dailypost.ng/2018/04/12/senate-erupts-uproar-lawmaker-accused-buhari-incompetence/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nigerian Daily Post</a>.</strong>  <strong>The Nigerian Assembly's Senate proceedings were disrupted yesterday after an opposition senator from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) said President Muhammadu Buhari is 'incompetent', according to a report in the <a href="http://dailypost.ng/2018/04/12/senate-erupts-uproar-lawmaker-accused-buhari-incompetence/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nigerian Daily Post</a>.</strong>
The Senator's comment came in response to Buhari's statement about the ongoing <a href="https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-nigeria-politics-buhari/violence-in-nigerias-swing-states-could-cost-buhari-votes-idUKKBN1HK0IV" target="_blank" rel="noopener">violence</a> between herdsmen and farmers in the Middle Belt region of Nigeria. Buhari had said "the killings are as a result of the people who were trained by the late Muammar Gaddafi" reported Nigeria's <a href="https://www.thecable.ng/just-rowdy-session-pdp-senator-calls-buhari-incompetent" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Cable Newspaper.</a>

This remark by the Senator comes a few days after President Buhari announced that he will be running for a second term in the Nigerian Presidential <a href="https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-nigeria-politics-explainer/explainer-the-race-for-nigerias-presidency-in-2019-idUKKBN1HK0JH" target="_blank" rel="noopener">elections</a> due in February 2019The President had issued his statement from London, where he has been a frequent visitor since his elections in 2015. Last year, he was in London for three months on an alleged <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2017/08/19/africa/nigeria-president-buhari/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">'medical vacation</a>' where he was being treated for an undefined illness.  Senator Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe was responding to a statement by the president concerning the ongoing <a href="https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-nigeria-politics-buhari/violence-in-nigerias-swing-states-could-cost-buhari-votes-idUKKBN1HK0IV" target="_blank" rel="noopener">violence</a> between herdsmen and farmers in the Middle Belt region of Nigeria, and comes a few days after Buhari announced he will be running for a second term in Nigeria's February 2019 presidential <a href="https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-nigeria-politics-explainer/explainer-the-race-for-nigerias-presidency-in-2019-idUKKBN1HK0JH" target="_blank" rel="noopener">elections</a>. Buhari declared his intentions from London, which he has frequently visited since coming to power in 2015, allegedly for <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2017/08/19/africa/nigeria-president-buhari/index.html">health reasons</a>.

Buhari's 'Change' campaign in 2015 was based on promises which included bringing an end to security threats in the country and stabilizing the <a href="https://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/what-buhari-promised-nigerians/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">economy</a>.  He has since witnessed a decline in popularity, following his government's failure to fulfill the promises made. Under Buhari's rule, the <a href="https://uk.reuters.com/article/nigeria-inflation/nigeria-annual-inflation-dips-to-13-34-pct-in-march-stats-office-idUKS8N1EF016" target="_blank" rel="noopener">economy</a> came out of recession but food inflation remained high at 16.1 percent. His government also failed to bring an end to the <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2018/04/02/africa/nigeria-boko-haram-attack-intl/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Boko Haram insurgency</a>, which is now in its tenth year.  Buhari's 2015 presidential bid was based on promises that included bringing an end to security threats in the country and stabilizing the <a href="https://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/what-buhari-promised-nigerians/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">economy</a>. The 75 year-old leader popularity plummeted after his administration's failure to meet campaign pledges. Under Buhari's rule, the Nigerian <a href="https://uk.reuters.com/article/nigeria-inflation/nigeria-annual-inflation-dips-to-13-34-pct-in-march-stats-office-idUKS8N1EF016" target="_blank" rel="noopener">economy</a> came out of a recession but food inflation remains high at 16.1 percent [LINK].
