On December 21, as many as 5.5 million people (El País) will vote for a new parliament in Catalonia, which will then form a government in the north-east Spanish region. The election follows this year's Catalan push for independence from the rest of Spain, which WikiTribune has covered in depth. It is unprecedented in the country's roughly four-decade-old democracy. On December 21, as many as 5.5 million people (El País) will vote for a new parliament in Catalonia, which will then form a government in the north-east Spanish region. The Spanish government in Madrid announced the new election just after it imposed direct rule over Catalonia, following the last Catalan parliament's unilateral declaration of independence on October 27. Some unionist Catalans see this vote as a way of returning the region to the Spanish fold (La Gaceta). For some independence supporters, however, it is just the most recent example of what they perceive to be a Madridista political culture that is tainted with strains of authoritarianism (The Times, article may be behind a paywall). The Spanish government in Madrid announced the new election just after it imposed direct rule over Catalonia, following the last Catalan parliament's unilateral declaration of independence on October 27. Some unionist Catalans see this vote as a way of returning the region to the Spanish fold (La Gaceta). Who will win is anyone's guess. Recent polls (El País) have support for the unionist and separatist blocs tied neck and neck, while giving the separatists a slightly higher chance of forming a new government. But as Jorge Galindo, a political analyst and editor of Politikon website, told WikiTribune, the answer is suspended like "a dice in the air." Who will win is anyone's guess. Recent polls (El País) have support for the unionist and separatist blocs tied neck and neck, while giving the separatists a slightly higher chance of forming a new government.
