Since late August, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya were forced to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh after lethal attacks on police posts by Rohingya militants prompted a brutal crackdown by Myanmar's army. The Rohingya are an historically oppressed Muslim minority group that have resided for centuries in Rakhine state, Myanmar. In a press release published yesterday, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said "the situation in northern Rakhine state constitutes ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya," echoing claims made in early September by the United Nations. Tillerson also opened the door for targeted sanctions against those responsible for the war crimes. Myanmar denies the claims.

Since late August, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya were forced to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh after lethal attacks on police posts by Rohingya militants prompted a brutal crackdown by Myanmar's army.
