The musician Neil Young, a longtime vintage car collector, lost a prized vehicle in the Malibu fires, in addition to losing other memorabilia. He shares the Malibu home with his wife, the actress Daryl Hannah.
“I bought ‘Pearl’ in 1974 on the last CSNY tour of that era,” reminisces Young in his website newspaper The Times-Contrarian,” calling it “A Fiery Embrace: the story of an awesome car and a great country."
The car has accompanied Young on many concert tours, and is in fact the place where he wrote one of his famous songs about being on the road, <em>White Line</em>.
"I wrote 'White Line' in the back of Pear on the CSNY 1974 stadium tour," Young said, going to call the song "a love song about traveling away from the pain.
<em>That old white line is a friend of mine and its good time that we been makin', right now I'm thinkin' 'bout those things that I know but the daylight will soon be breakin'</em>"
The car, a 1954 Cadillac limousine, bears the same name as the title of Pearl Jam’s first album: Pearl 10.
“They were happily surprised to see her license plate ‘Pearl 10.’ Pearl, the name I had given my car, was also the title of their first album ‘Pearl 10’," Young said. "They were elated at the happy coincidence. Since then Pearl Jam appeared at the Bridge School concert more times than any other band. We are very thankful for Pearl Jam’s help, and for Eddie [Vedder] ’s many solo appearances in support of the Bridge School.”
Young goes on to say "in a recent image, we see the demise of this great old car. Mother Nature and Climate Change, in their fiery embrace, took her with them. Such is life."
Young goes further, chastising President Trump for his denial of climate change, which Young credits with the fires.
"I have to add this fire was the worst thing I have ever seen in my 73 years. Its awesome power changed my life forever. To imagine we have a leader ignoring Climate Change is just unbelievable. How could the USA have slipped so far, so fast?
In his mind, he knows more than the Navy leaders about to support air power on the sea, he knows more about immigration than anyone else and he knows more about Climate Change than the world's scientists.
We are putting the USA and the World in grave danger with the delusional ignorance of DT. He's unfit to be president and soon America must end this. I hope we have the two years we need and the wisdom to act in a democratic, peaceful way."
&nbsp “Pearl was a beautiful car,” Young said.
