I did the simple arithmetic: 72 divided by 82000 is 0.08% That means that if you get measles there is a 0.08% chance of death… additionally, there is no research or report indicating whether or not having the measles and healing improves the child’s immune system to fight later diseases. Are we sure some hyper-pharmaceutical companies aren’t trying to increase demand for their product thru fear?

      Hi Frank,
Thanks for the prompt, I did a bit of reading and have added some journal articles to the story that report the long-term effect of measles. If you have any supporting or contrary sources, please feel free to post them and we can try and improve the article.
      Cheers

I think the significant impact of the number of people hospitalised on health care systems is pretty important to remember as well. Even for those that have measles with no long-term impact, the resources required to treat the patient mustn’t be discounted.
For example, an A&E attendance costs the NHS around £160, and non-elective inpatients (which I would imagine measles patient would come under) £1,603 an admission ( see- https://improvement.nhs.uk/documents/1972/1_-_Reference_costs_201718.pdf )
The impact on both the healthcare system and the patient appears pretty significant.
