Fact check: Ted Lieu's claims about Southern Border immigrants

Ted Lieu, member of the congress, wrote a tweet in which he claimed the following :

” Violent crime is down”

Fact check 1 : True. 

The bureau of justice statistics collects information each year ” data are obtained from a nationally representative sample of about 135,000 households, composed of nearly 225,000 persons, on the frequency, characteristics, and consequences of criminal victimization in the United States”

Claim 2 

” Property crime is down”

Fact check 2: False

The National Crime Victimization Survey measures “the property crimes of household burglary, motor vehicle theft, and property theft”, it reports here that there was a statistically insignificant decrease in property crime between 2015 and 2017.


Claim 3 

” Immigrants, both documented & undocumented, commit less crime than native born citizens”

Fact check 3 : True. 

A report by business insider corroborates the analysis found that” Statistics suggest, however, that unauthorized immigrants actually commit crimes at lower rates than native-born citizens”
