Is this really worth writing about in an international newspaper? I’m in London, England, and (with respect) an attempted robbery on the other side of the world isn’t earth-shattering news.

If you do want the article published, at least include the name of the country where it happened in the headline for the benefit of readers outside the USA.

This reminds me to a discussion which startet one year ago and came to a stop in February:

We have the goal of being a very very large international, global, multilingual news site – not a small site covering only the biggest global issues. Also, right now, we are such a small site that we are clearly in need of exploring ideas before we have even built the infrastructure to cope with them perfectly.

(What I mean is that eventually it will of course make sense to geolocate and show people headlines relevant to their location, to have regional/local homepages, etc. Right now, it’s not huge deal to have a few oddities on the front page!)

So I would say that (a) it does belong on the site and (b) you are 100% right that the headline and other aspects of the story need to better serve the needs of a global audience.
