Fact Check: Senator Dianne Feinstein's claims about Thomas Farr


Senator Dianne Feinstein, United States Senator from California, tweeted about the nomination of Mr. Thomas Farr, President Trump’s judicial nominee. In the tweet, she claimed the following:

Mr. Farr has remained active in efforts to depress & dilute African-American voting. In 2013 he defended North Carolina’s congressional & legislative districts, which were redrawn to reduce the power of African-American voters. And in 2016 he defended a restrictive voter ID law.

Claim 1:

Factcheck 1: True. 

According to civilrights.org and court documents, Farr did support the redrawing of districts that the Supreme Court found to be supressing the power of African-American voters.

Claim 2: 

“in 2016 he defended a restrictive voter ID law”

Factcheck 2: True. 

According to the AP, Farr supported a voter ID law that was ruled to be too restrictive and targeting African-American individuals with “surgical precision.”
