Media Roundup: M&S Receive Backlash for Selling the Hijab


Marks and Spencer, a UK retailer, has received criticism for selling the hijab to school pupils as young as nine. Those criticizing M&S’s decision to stock this headscarf, that is part of the Muslim faith and worn by some women, claim it is oppressing and sexualizing young girls who ‘may’ be forced to wear it (Daily Mail).

M&S condemned over sale of hijabs for three-year-olds . Marks & Spencer has been accused of “facilitating medievalism” by selling hijabs for children as young as three (The Times).

However, those who support the leading UK store have commented on how inclusive M&S are being for young Muslim girls and that the wearing of a hijab does not hinder anyone’s education (The Independent).

Marks and Spencer have responded to the backlash by saying they are just responding to the demand they have received from schools to add hijabs to their ‘back to school’ collection (Telegraph).
