The New York State Tax Department said it is investigating claims that President Trump aided his parents in avoiding millions of dollars in taxes. The claims were first published in the New York Times.
The paper alleges that Trump was involved in “dubious tax schemes” during the 1990s. These included “instances of outright fraud”, according to the newspaper.
Trump has repeatedly claimed he is a self-made billionaire who received little financial help from his father. But the New York Times investigation, based on more than 100,000 pages of documents, alleges he received the equivalent of $413 million.
Trump’s lawyer Charles Harder said in a statement: “There was no fraud or tax evasion by anyone. The facts upon which The Times bases its false allegations are extremely inaccurate.”
