Fact check: Did Donald Trump call the FBI a 'cancer in our country'?

In an interview with The Hill on September 18, John Solomon and Buck Sexton asked the president what he thought of the FBI probe. Trump responded:

I hope to be able put this up as one of my crowning achievements that I was able to … expose something that is truly a cancer in our country.

However, The New York Times’ Peter Baker tweeted

And it was retweeted by his colleague Maggie Haberman.

The popular internet news channel The Young Turks also had a video with the headline: “Trump, FBI is cancer to the country.”

Some media outlets like Politico have noted that Trump was specifically referring to corruption inside the FBI rather than the FBI itself.

In an interview with The Hill, Trump said that he believes his crusade against the FBI, whose past leadership he has criticized as biased against him, will ultimately reveal corruption inside the bureau. Uncovering that corruption, the president said, could be one of the “crowning achievements” of his administration.

Buck Sexton, one of The Hill‘s interviewers tweeted back to Baker,

Claim:

Trump calls FBI “truly a cancer in our country”

Fact check:

As Buck Sexton tweeted, who actually interviewed the president, Trump was taken out of context and he was referring to the FBI Russia investigation and some individuals involved which he has claimed to be corrupt and dishonest. We rate this claim false.
