Lula calls on Brazilians to back Fernando Haddad

Former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has written a letter from his prison cell calling on citizens to vote for Fernando Haddad (Associated Press).

Lula, who is serving a 12-year prison sentence for money laundering and corruption (Los Angeles Times), named Haddad as his replacement on the Workers’ Party ticket in October’s presidential election.

“I want everyone who would vote for me to vote for Fernando Haddad for president of Brazil,” da Silva, who Brazilians call Lula, said on Tuesday.

“From now on he will be Lula for millions of Brazilians.”
