Trump warns of ‘violence' if Democrats gain control of Congress

In a meeting with Christian leaders inside the White House on Monday, President Donald J. Trump warned of “violence” from opposing political groups if Republicans were to lose control of Congress (Fox News). The meeting was meant to rally voter support ahead of upcoming mid-term elections.

“This November 6 election is very much a referendum on not only me, it’s a referendum on your religion, it’s a referendum on free speech and the First Amendment,” Trump said, according to a recording provided by people in the room (CNN). “They will overturn everything that we’ve done and they will do it quickly and violently. And violently. There is violence.”

Evangelical Christians have remained a solid block of support for the president.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 seats in the 100-member Senate are up for election on the November ballot.

Republicans currently maintain majorities in both chambers of Congress. Democrats need to pick up a net gain of 23 seats to control the House, and two to take back the Senate (NPR). Many Democrats are anticipating a “blue wave” that will usher them back into power, along with an expected ability to limit the powers and policies of the Trump administration (BBC).
