Winter bushfires stun experts in Australia

Serious bushfires raging across Australia’s most populous state, New South Wales, have shocked experts (SBS News) and stretched worldwide firefighting resources to capacity.

These blazes are usually expected over summer months, and some of Australia’s firefighting personnel and equipment is redeployed to the northern hemisphere (Sydney Morning Herald) to fight fires there through the southern hemisphere’s winter months, lowering preparedness.

“We’re seeing something which is unusual in the extreme,” David Bowman, a professor of Environmental Change Biology, told AAP on Wednesday.
