I wonder how the world’s computer users would react if told that henceforth they would have to pay for Google’s services. it strikes me that the European authorities have given little thought to the benefits that Google brings to the world.

I am no great fan of big business. I am no great fan of Google. I find some of their practices frustrating and annoying. But always I tell myself: their services are free. And I tell you what, hardly a minute goes by during my day when I’m not using one or other of them: email, search, maps, translation—the list is extensive. Their value to me, an ordinary self-employed person, is immeasurable.

Yes we should all be made aware of the non-monetary price we have to pay. But then it’s our choice. I for one am happy that I get presented with online ads that reflect what I was recently searching for. If I weren’t, I would use a different search engine—of which there are many. And I don’t get about Google installing search engines on mobile phones. I access Google search, or its alternative, via a web browser. Any web browser. I happen to be an Apple user. I access Google via the Apple default browser, Safari. I do have Google Chrome on my iPhone, and the Google search app. I never use either. Why can that not be true of an Android user?

When will all the world’s authorities focus on discovering how big business uses its power and influence, and then publicising this to the public, in order for people to make their own decisions about what services and products to use? Instead they proscribe, and fine, businesses for their behaviour, to the detriment of those who are happy to play the game.
