Hi Laura. Unfortunately I had already written the story by the time you had suggested this but hopefully you are still interested. The article has just been published – https://www.wikitribune.com/story/2018/08/08/religion/secular-church-sunday-assembly-declining-amid-rise-of-unbelief/79948/

Harry — I did not intend to take your by-line. I just fixed a typo, pressed “save,” and my name appeared in the by-line. I am unable to change it back. I’m sorry for this error. Maybe you or an editor with more powerful authority can change it back? Steve Merican

If atheïsts feel the need yo congregate as atheïsts, so be it, why not? But why call it ‘a church’? That’s like admitting you’re craving for a church, it’s like admitting as a vegetarian that you are craving for meat and showing a need to replace meat by fake meat that looks like meat. I, as an atheïst, would never attend an ‘atheïst church’. To me , an ‘atheïst church’ can only be a ‘counter-church’. Something directed against believer churches.

That’s a good question as to why call it a ‘church’? The word has direct link with Christianity. Therefore, it seems like admitting that there’s a need for a church (as you say ‘meat’ for a vegetarian).

On both points I agree. I would add that there’s nothing wrong with saying that you like a church even as an atheist. It’s not like atheists are anti-theists, you should be free to take aspects of any religion that you like.

Ultimately, atheism is a position on one and only one question: do you believe that a God exists? That’s it. There’s no textbook or doctrine of atheism. Atheists come with different beliefs on everything else, which can include wanting to get together in a church or temple like environment.

      Hope that helps.

Hi Varun. I would have to check the interview transcript but I am pretty sure Sanderson told me he believes there is a need for what he calls ‘church.’ think Sunday Assembly refer to themselves as a variety of things, but when they call themselves ‘a church’ they do so because they have incorporated things from a christian church, and because they want to encourage the community aspect, which I think is more thought of surrounding a church, then say an atheist club.

I wonder whether there is a tax advantage to being a church.

Hi John. If you comment and tick the boxes below you can follow comments. Unfortunately there is not a way to get emails when the text of stories are updated, without having editing them. However, this is a feature being worked on!
