Whale dies after ingesting 80 plastic rubbish bags

A male pilot whale vomited up five black plastic waste bags while being rescued from a canal in Thailand, multiple news outlets reported. It was later found to have swallowed around 80 such bags.

The whale, which died despite intense efforts to save it, was found to have 18 lbs (8.2kg) of plastic waste in its stomach when a necropsy (post-mortem) was carried out.

“This plastic rubbish made the whale sick and unable to hunt for food,” a local Marine Resources department official said, according to Reuters.

The New York Times, quoting a Science journal study, said Thailand is one of the top six countries in the world for discarding plastics into the environment.

Eight million tonnes of plastic, including bottles and packaging, are dumped into the ocean every year,  the United Nations Environment Programme said in 2017.
