I would like to add a development to one of the claims of this story. The claim that one million Uighurs have been incarcerated in China’s Xinjiang province by Reuters is based on what they claim are UN reports.

However, that appears to be false. The investigative journalists Ben Norton and Ajit Singh contacted the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and confirmed that it was not the UN itself but one member on an independent committee who made the claim.

“A spokesperson from the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) confirmed in a statement to the Grayzone that the allegation of Chinese “camps” was not made by the United Nations, but rather by a member of an independent committee that does not speak for the UN as a whole. That member happened to be the only American on the committee, and one with no background of scholarship or research on China.”

Thanks, can you please add this to the story where appropriate? And we will look at it as a pending edit.

The premise is false. Not every country exterminates its indigenous population. In fact, I think only a small minority (often western) nations do/have done it.

So this impulse to wipe out any and all minority groups within reach is well recorded in human history. This cannot be sanctioned by any appeal to poverty or a scarcity of the means to survive. There is plenty of everything for everybody. So the cause must by elimination must be our human unwillingness to give anybody anything. Maybe the USA is right to expand continuous warfare to the entire world. Actually i did not think my FB post would make it to the wiki. Its not news as such is it?

Hi John, genocide/ethnic cleansing is unfortunately continually in the news. But also your question could give rise to other contributions or articles. And it is a big, human, question.

Many historians argue that a scarcity logic underpins many genocides. Timothy Snyder, for example, argues (in my view fairly convincingly) in “Black Earth” that Hitler’s worldview was ecological and zero-sum: the Jewish and Aryan races were in competition for the same, finite resources. The Jews were the cause of an imbalance in nature; to restore the Earth to its original state, they needed to be annihilated.
