Pedro Sánchez is new Spanish PM as Rajoy forced out of job

Pedro Sánchez has been sworn in as Spain’s new prime minister after Mariano Rajoy was ousted following a corruption scandal.

King Felipe swore in Sánchez in Madrid’s Palacio de la Zarzuela — the royal residence — Saturday June 2, with Rajoy in attendance (The Guardian).

Being an atheist, Sánchez became the first prime minister to take the oath to protect the Spanish constitution without a bible or crucifix since the country transferred to democracy in 1977 (The Independent).

Sánchez, a former professor of economics, will replace Rajoy after PSOE (Partido Socialista Obrero Español), won a no-confidence vote with the support of 180 MPs – four more than the 176 needed in the 350-seat parliament.

169 MPs from PP, Ciudadanos, Unión del Pueblo Navarro and Foro Asturias opposed the motion, and only Coalición Canaria abstained (El País in English and El País in Spanish).

An announcement from PNV (Basque Nationalist Party) Thursday May 31 that it would vote in favour of the motion implied the termination of Mr Rajoy’s mandate, and anticipated the collapse of PP’s minority government via a parliamentary vote (The Independent).

Rajoy, who was in office for nearly eight years, was badly damaged by a court verdict that identified it as a beneficiary of a large kickbacks-for-contracts scheme (ABC News).

Rajoy is the first prime minister in modern Spanish history to be defeated by a no-confidence motion.
